Jack Sweeting - A short biography.
 
 

Jack Sweeting is owner of JXS Software and one of the few Chemical Engineers that entered engineering as a mechanical engineering apprentice and designer.

Training

With Vickers Armstrongs, training included a variety of work ranging from submarine nuclear compartment systems through cement machinery to railway and marine diesels and included period in Vicker's metallurgical laboratory. Study in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Leeds included a period of attachment to ICI and led to the degrees of BSc(Hons) and MPhil.

Engineering Employment

Desalination research work at Vickers included an attachment to the UKAEA. Several years with Air Products PLC (AP) saw a variety of business related roles including financial analysis, sales, proposal and departmental management. Estimating experiance began with the liquid hydrogen plant to supply the first NASA space shuttle; this was preprared  during a period spent in America with the parent company - Air Products and Chemicals Inc.

Computing

As manager of the AP Proposal department, introduced Apple computers that were amongst the first in the company. Later machines benefited from a custom designed MS-DOS-based estimating system that incorporated automatic estimate risk analysis. The underlying theory behind this system has been expanded and is presented with other related topics in a book and two articles.

Lecturing and Training

Experience includes:

  • Part-time lecturer in statistics at Kingston Business School.
  • Part-time lecturer in computing at North East Surrey College of Technology.
  • Full-time lecturer in computing at Coulsdon College
  • Currently part-time lecturer in Visual Basic programming at Guildford College.
